§ GLOSSARY · UNDERLAY
UNDERLAY
A first stitched layer placed under the visible design that anchors the fabric and supports the top stitches.
Embroidery vocabularyPlain-English definition
WHAT IT MEANS
Underlay is the foundation embroidery the machine lays before the visible design, typically zigzag or edge-run stitches at low density. It pulls the fabric flat, locks down stabilizer, and gives the top stitches something to sit against. Without underlay, the top layer of satin or fill stitches tends to sink into the fabric, lose definition, and pull edges.
WHEN IT MATTERS
Bad or missing underlay is one of the most common causes of fuzzy outlines, show-through, and edge bird-nesting on stretchy or napped fabrics.
