§ GLOSSARY · STABILIZER / BACKING
STABILIZER / BACKING
Material placed behind the fabric to keep it flat and support the stitches during embroidery.
Embroidery vocabularyPlain-English definition
WHAT IT MEANS
Stabilizer (sometimes called backing) is the layer behind the fabric that absorbs the force of the needle, prevents the fabric from distorting, and supports stitch density. Common types include tearaway (removed after stitching), cutaway (trimmed and left in place), and water-soluble (washed out). The right choice depends on fabric type and stitch density.
WHEN IT MATTERS
Stabilizer choice is the single biggest determinant of long-term embroidery quality. Cutaway stays with the garment and supports the stitches through wash cycles; tearaway is faster but offers less long-term support.
