↳ USE CASE · EXPORT DST / PES / JEF

THE RIGHT FILE FOR the machine.

Export pages should teach a practical truth: format conversion is useful, but the file still needs validation and setup context before it is production-ready.

File and setup notes exported together.

§ 01

Format intent

Machine formats carry stitch instructions, but they do not always carry every design decision. The safer workflow validates before export.

  • DST for broad commercial compatibility
  • PES for many Brother workflows
  • JEF for many Janome workflows
§ 02

Conversion caveats

A converted file can lose source intent if the input format lacks object, density, or color metadata. That limitation should be visible, not hidden.

  • Review density and underlay after conversion
  • Check color stops and trim assumptions
  • Name exported files by machine and hoop when possible
§ 03

Package output

A production-ready export package includes the file and the setup context that explains how to use it.

  • Machine format files
  • Hoop and thread notes
  • Validation report and remaining warnings
Workflow

Validate before conversion becomes delivery.

  1. 01Open the source design and choose the target machine or file format.
  2. 02Run validation so hoop fit, density, and fine-detail issues are visible before export.
  3. 03Review format-specific warnings around color stops, trims, and lost metadata.
  4. 04Download the machine file with setup notes so the recipient understands the assumptions.
Honest limit

Conversion is not digitizing.

If a design was poorly digitized before conversion, changing the file extension will not fix the stitch quality. Export should sit after validation, not replace it.
