§ FILE FORMAT · JEF
JEF Janome Embroidery File
Janome users expect JEF — sending DST forces a format conversion at the machine and frequently loses the color sequence the design relied on.

ORIGIN
Janome and Elna mid-tier embroidery machines, plus a chunk of older commercial-light single-heads.

HOW VALIDSTITCH HANDLES JEF
ValidStitch parses JEF stitch records and recovers thread color indices, the hoop selection, and the design origin. Validation runs identically to DST and PES.
COMMON GOTCHAS
- JEF hoop codes are machine-model-specific — a JEF emitted for an MC-500E will reject on a Memory Craft 350E.
- Color indices point into the Janome palette; cross-reference against the operator's thread chart before runs.
- Some files marked .JEF are actually JEF+ (newer variant) — older machines refuse to load JEF+.
