Brother PE800: load a PES file from USB (step-by-step)

Get a validated PES embroidery file onto a USB drive the Brother PE800 will read, then load it at the machine. Covers FAT32 formatting, the root-folder gotcha, eject-before-unplug, and the LCD picker.

The Brother PE800 reads PES files from a USB flash drive. Most upload failures at the machine are USB-formatting or folder-name issues, not file issues. Here's the cleanest path.

Steps · 5
Send a PES to a Brother PE800
  1. 01
    Validate and export to PES
In ValidStitch, validate the design and clear any errors. Export with destination format = PES. The exporter writes a version-10 PES with the embedded thread palette intact.
  2. 02
    Format the USB to FAT32
The PE800 reads FAT32-formatted USB drives only. exFAT and NTFS will not appear in the machine's file picker. On Windows, right-click the USB → Format → File system: FAT32 → Start. On macOS, use Disk Utility → Erase → Format: MS-DOS (FAT).
  3. 03
Copy the PES to the USB root
Copy the .pes file directly to the root of the USB drive — not inside a folder. The PE800 doesn't recurse subfolders by default. If you have multiple files, drop them all at the root.
  4. 04
Eject cleanly and walk it over
Eject the USB from your computer (right-click → Eject on Windows, Cmd-E on macOS). A copy-then-unplug skips the file-system flush and the file may be incomplete on the drive even though the copy progress bar finished.
  5. 05
Insert at the PE800 and select
Insert the USB into the PE800's USB port (right side, near the LCD). Press the USB icon on the LCD, scroll to your file, tap to preview, then Set to load into the machine. If the file doesn't show up, check the format (FAT32) and the location (root, not in a folder).
